Meet Natalie. She’s incredibly creative and bright, always riding the wave of a new idea or inspiration. She’s constantly starting new projects, researching and learning about her passions. However, while consistently inspired, motivation escapes her. The beginnings of a venture are exciting and fun, but as the work gets more difficult and deliberate, she begins to have doubts. As thoughts of falling short of expectations or worse, failure, set in, she gets more and more discouraged. Anxious and disheartened, she abandons the project.
Discouragement and lack of motivation are very difficult to ignore, especially when working on something you are very passionate about. It can lead many people to give up on their ambitions, too doubtful and hopeless to continue. It’s important to develop coping skills and grit to be able to persist in spite of disappointment or frustration. As motivation and inspiration are fleeting, these things are crucial to continued prosperity.
1. In order to handle discouragement, it could be beneficial to break up a big task into a series of smaller ones. This would make the project seem a lot less overwhelming and discourage frustration or anxiousness. This way, you can continuously cross off the tasks you’ve set for yourself and feel about completing them.
2. Another way to overcome dejection is to talk about it. Rather than bottling up frustrations, it could be beneficial to speak to someone you trust about what’s bothering you. You can let go of that anxious energy, maybe ask for help. SImply talking about your problem may feel like taking a step towards solving it.
3. Finally, sometimes, rather than forcing yourself to continue working through frustration, it may be time to simply take a break. Sometimes, a distraction from work may be the very thing that gets you through a mental block. Taking some time for yourself is a great way to refresh and rejuvenate your brain, get it ready to return to a task.
