Katie wants to be a writer. She loves literature and composition, is enthralled by the world of prose and poetry. She’s written pieces for herself before, found it incredibly engaging and gratifying to see the words come to life. However whenever attempting to write professionally, with the intent of inevitably sharing her work, she grows skeptical.
Suddenly, her sentences seem bland and uninspired in comparison to writers she’s spent so long worshipping. She can’t seem to write a draft without scrutinizing the imperfections, the idea of falling short catastrophic. She believes herself to be less than, boring, ordinary. She suddenly can’t find a reason to even attempt such art when her predecessors clearly did a much better job, and seemingly did it effortlessly.
Self limiting beliefs can be rather debilitating when it comes to pursuing your passions, seemingly growing stronger with time. They can prevent you from even attempting a project, leaving it an unfinished desire. This is even more problematic, considering you never even get the chance to disprove these beliefs, spurring them further. This is why it’s so important to dismantle these beliefs before they prevent you from living your life to the fullest.
1. One way of overcoming these self negative beliefs is to simply ignore them. Often, interacting with intrusive thoughts just aggravates and encourages them, so it’s better to simply put your mind on something else. This is the way breath meditation works, directing your mind back to your breath whenever it wanders. This same method can be applied here. Whenever a discouraging thought enters, simply acknowledge it and put it back onto a productive task.
2. Another way to overcome self limiting beliefs is to disprove them. If you feel that you’re an incompetant writer and that nobody would ever like your work, maybe the only way to purge these thoughts is to prove them otherwise. Keep working in spite of your inner monologue and finish. Once you’re done, you can be the judge of whether they were right.
3. Finally, it could be incredibly beneficial to stop taking yourself so seriously. Pursue your passions for the sake of the experience rather than the outcome. Set a goal to enjoy yourself rather than accomplish perfection. This will allow you to let go of a lot of that anxiety.
