Get Rid Of Your Fear Of Therapy Once and For All
There’s a very real and common hesitance towards therapy among those who struggle with mental health. It may seem counterproductive, as one would think that getting help for something so debilitating wouldn’t prompt much doubt, but the phenomenon persists.
It garners the question: why do so many people fear therapy, and how can we overcome it?
There’s a multitude of varied answers to this question, ones that go more in-depth with regard to character and individuality, but it generally boils down to fear of judgment, fear of hopelessness, and comfort in discomfort.
It’s not irrational to be scared of being judged or shunned, to fear that no one can help, that a therapist deems you beyond hope. It’s not unreasonable to take comfort in your misery, to be too afraid of letting it go in favor of a clearer mind, as the unknown is very scary, and can be rather intimidating.
However, ultimately, these are all simply thoughts keeping us incarcerated in our suffering, devices the mind uses to keep us locked up. It can be rather freeing to note that you don’t always have to listen to them, that the mind is not reality.
Maybe just concede to try. Go in without expectations, and see where the session takes you. Don’t expect a cure or a miracle, but be open. Don’t cast aside the fears and doubts, simply acknowledge they exist. Only once you open yourself up to experience, can you really determine the truth.
